Tube Strikes? Another Reason to Work from Home
http://mobileoffice.about.com/b/2010/09/07/tube-strikes-another-reason-to-work-from-home.htm

Avoiding the agony of rush hour, reducing fuel consumption and pollution, and increasing productivity are some of the most often-mentioned pros of telecommuting. Another scenario that supports working from home are when it's just impossible to get to work, during inclement weather, for example, or, as UK-based BroadbandGenie suggests in their blog post, when transit workers go on strike.

BBC News reports that millions of Tube passengers were severely impacted by the walkout of London Underground staff yesterday. On all but the Northern Line, service was suspended or delayed during the morning rush hour. While the Tube union workers battled the London Underground management over a cut in 800 jobs, it seems like the real casualties are the commuters.

Although the Tube strike is a more unusual and extreme example of the stress of commuting, it's a reminder also that it's a good idea for companies to at least set up the capability for employees to work from home, if only as a contingency plan.

Mobile Employees Unlikely to Disconnect (Even for Labor Day)
http://mobileoffice.about.com/b/2010/09/03/mobile-employees-unlikely-to-disconnect-even-for-labor-day.htm

It's the start of a long weekend, one in which we celebrate the end of summer as well as the efforts of all working people. But I have a feeling even with Labor Day approaching, many of you mobile workers will still be plugged in. It's a hard habit to break (and sometimes it's not up to us either).

Last week, iPass, a leading provider of mobility services (and one of the companies mentioned in our International Wireless ISPs list), published the results of a mobile employee survey showing that "the majority of respondents (53.6 percent) never truly disconnect from technology." Nearly all mobile workers carry two or more mobile devices with them all the time, and 95% go online even while on vacation, most of the time connecting for work. Guilty as charged.

We're living in an era where ubiquitous Web access is making it harder to separate work from our personal lives, and downtime is harder to come by. Your smartphone may constantly bleep when a new email has come in or, because your co-workers know you're always checking email or will answer calls from the office even while on vacation, you're pretty much always on call -- even for the slightest issues.

This is the 24/7 information age we live in, but I'd like to propose that even if technology enables us to work anywhere, anytime, it doesn't mean we should work everywhere, all the time. I'm all for mobile computing and mobile technology, obviously, but it's more about being able to do location-independent work and accomplish my job tasks when I'm needed. For my sanity, I need to disconnect and admit that Labor Day -- when the office is closed -- is not one of those times.

What about you? Do you have a harder time unplugging because you are a mobile professional or remote worker? or will it be easy for you to enjoy the Labor Day holiday sans technology?

Technology & Buyer's Remorse (Apple's New iPod touch)
http://mobileoffice.about.com/b/2010/09/01/apples-new-ipod-touch-technolgy.htm

The 4th generation iPod touch

As I was awaiting my new iMac last week, out came a revelation of a new iMac Touch patent from Patently Apple -- a touchscreen iMac, apparently, rumored to be headed for the shelves as early as this winter holiday season. Drats. I struggled for a while deciding whether or not to cancel a concrete order for something that may not even go to market. My iMac arrived, even though I am a strong touchscreen aficionado.

And then of course Apple announced today an awful lot of updates, including an overhaul of Apple TV, new features in the 4th generation iPod touch, even smaller iPod nano and iPod Shuffle MP3 players, and iOS and iTunes enhancements. Great! The thing is, last week I also got the iPod touch, albeit free via the education store incentive for purchasing the iMac. Even if I felt like returning the iMac and the now-outdated iPod so I could order the iMac again with the latest iPod touch, the new iPod touch isn't eligible for the rebate. Double drats!

The point of this parable is that it's really impossible to time tech purchases. Yes, Apple regularly announces new products in the fall, and I could have waited, but I'm pretty sure they cleverly planned that deadline on the iPod touch rebate for early next week and limited the incentive to the now-old model to coincide with the new batch of devices.

For other products that aren't as regularly replaced, you can follow rumor sites or track patents filed, but in the end, just as when you buy any expensive, quickly-depreciating product (like a car or HDTV), you have to weigh cost and current needs with how important it is to have the latest or next-generation features. I could definitely use front- and rear-facing cameras on the new iPod touch and really wish the iMac was a touchscreen all-in-one, but my current needs outweighed waiting for the next-generation models and forgoing the clearance-sale incentive on the iPod touch.

Buyer's remorse may be inevitable when it comes to gadgets and computing devices, because technology changes so quickly. The best thing to do is get what will best meet your needs now (if you really do need a device now), at your current budget, that will hopefully serve you for the lifespan of the product.

Setting Up a New Computer: Essential Applications
http://mobileoffice.about.com/b/2010/08/30/essential-application.htm

There's nothing like setting up a brand-new computer to remind you of which applications you really must have installed. That was the exercise that absorbed most of my time this weekend, and it turns out only a handful of programs are really necessary to get up and running. Although it still takes time to set up a new computer, having Webmail, online data storage, and some settings (like bookmarks and browser preferences) synced to the cloud really does streamline the process and enable mobility.

Besides the office applications and creative software suites that I need for my daily work, these are the programs I installed -- and the types of programs I recommend everyone install when setting up a new computer -- in sequential order:

Make Free Phone Calls from Within Gmail
http://mobileoffice.about.com/b/2010/08/27/make-free-phone-calls-from-within-gmail.htm

Call phones from within Gmail

Screenshot by Melanie Pinola

The ever-innovating Google has just recently added another new feature to Gmail: the ability to make free calls within the U.S. and Canada (and to other countries at pretty low rates) directly from your email account. This integration of Google Voice, Google's free VoIP service, with the Gmail system makes it more convenient to place and receive online phone calls, since if you are a Gmail user, you probably have all your contacts' information in the service already. Now rather than going to Google Voice, you just need to have your Gmail window open.

If you don't already see a "call phone" link under the Chat sidebar, it should be coming to you soon. I gave it a try by calling myself and found the process pretty easy (my cell phone showed the incoming call as being from my Google Voice number). There was, however, a strange echo of everything I said to myself on the call reverberating through the computer's speakers, so further testing is still needed. You can also install a video chat plugin to do video calling too.

I can see this being a really convenient service for remote workers to make calls over Wi-Fi, for example, from their laptops at Starbucks or, while traveling, you can log into your Gmail from a rented computer at an Internet cafe and make cheap international calls from there. Unfortunately, the Google-Voice-in-Gmail probably won't work on your mobile phone browser...yet...

According to Google, the domestic calling should be free for at least the rest of the year. See more at Google's Gmail Voice page. On Our Way to the 4-Hour Workweek?
http://mobileoffice.about.com/b/2010/08/24/on-our-way-to-the-4-hour-workweek.htm

Photo © Darryl Leniuk / Getty Images

I just started reading Timothy Ferriss' The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich -- enticing title, right? What's struck me most off the bat was how some of the main themes in the book -- namely mobility and increasing productivity to save time -- are also major topics for this site.

Successfully negotiating a remote work arrangement, for example, according to Ferriss, is the goal for employees -- a necessary step to liberating themselves from the office environment and eventually working just a quarter of the time they used to (with the same or higher pay). And although I'm not yet comfortable following the recommendation to check email just twice a day (Ferriss does so only once a week!), reducing information overload is another of our shared strategies. The ability to work (or, rather, live) anywhere is also a common goal.

I'm only part-way through the book so far, which might explain why my income hasn't quadrupled and my time working hasn't shrunk*, but I will advise one thing if you also decide to give this book a try: don't read it late at night before bed. You may end up losing sleep, instead dreaming up odd, entrepreneurial get-rich-quick schemes.

Who Uses Which Gadgets, Where
http://mobileoffice.about.com/b/2010/08/20/who-uses-which-gadgets-where.htm

Retrevo, a consumer electronics review and shopping site, has recently published parts of its 2010 Gadget Census, considered "the first ever comprehensive look at what gadgets people own and how they use them." The study, based on over 7,500 responses from March through July 2010, offers interesting insights into consumers' tech use.

For example,

Colorado has the most laptops (13% more households with at least one laptop)

California won the green gadgets award (47% more likely to recycle an old gadget)

New Yorkers own the most iPads (52% more households with at least one)

Maryland has the most smartphones (48% more households with at least one) and HDTVs, while feature phones rule in Pennsylvania

and Massachusetts readers like digital books (49% more likely to be using an e-reader)

The Gadget Census also reports on gadget trends in major metropolitan areas, finding New Yorkers to be emerging technology owners and Phoenix to be more "old school" tech users. One report also pits some major metros against each other, for gadget bragging rights, I guess.

Check out the interesting results... Stay Focused When Working Away from the Office
http://mobileoffice.about.com/b/2010/08/17/stay-focused-when-working-away-from-the-office.htm

On one hand, telecommuters and others who work away from the office are more productive because they're not subject to the rampant distractions found at the office... but on the other hand, remote workers tend to experience more personal kinds of distractions (interruptions from a sick or bored child, for example). Working from home takes great discipline -- "the kind of discipline that keeps you at your desk when no one will know if you are not," as Web Worker Daily puts it in their 7 Discipline-Builders for Remote Workers.

The discipline-building tactics WWD lists are important ones for any professional to stay focused, but they're particularly useful for those of us who need to be even more disciplined because we're less intensely managed. These are Type A sorts of tactics, too (e.g., "Plan Your Day") -- remote workers tend to be more organized than others because we have to be in order to be successful.

Only the last discipline-builder, "Do Something You Enjoy," didn't seem to fit -- the author advises that being passionate about or a believer in your tasks will help you be more disciplined, but I find that it's exactly those non-enjoyable tasks -- that all of us have to do -- where our discipline is tested and strengthened. In other words, we build discipline so we can somehow manage to do those thankless tasks (for the sake of the more enjoyable ones), not the other way around.

For those mundane tasks, commiting yourself 100% to the activity (shutting out those "this is boring!" or "why do I have to this?!" thoughts) can help you get through the challenging parts of your on- or off-site day. Zen sages put it more elegantly: "Washing the dishes is like washing a baby Buddha."

Details on Starbucks' Exclusive Content for Wi-Fi Users
http://mobileoffice.about.com/b/2010/08/13/details-on-starbucks-exclusive-content-for-wi-fi-users.htm

Mashable yesterday posted a piece on How Starbucks Plans to Capitalize on Free Wi-Fi -- details on the Starbucks Digital Network (SDN) which will offer exclusive, premium content to Starbucks Wi-Fi customers.

Starbucks' switch to offering free Wi-Fi to all customers was only recently announced and implemented last month. Along with that announcement of unlimited Wi-Fi access was an intriguing yet barely detailed mention of the Starbucks Digital Network.

Mashable's article reveals that SDN will be "a localized five channel network with curated content from the best sources in the following categories: News, Entertainment, Wellness, Business & Careers and My Neighborhood." There will be free iTunes downloads, Nick Jr. Boost access for kids (and their parents -- so we can actually get a chance to drink our coffees!), and other premium content.

The most compelling part of SDN for mobile professionals in particular is the free access to content from otherwise paid content providers such as The New York Times and USA Today. Without a doubt, this added value will help draw more Starbucks Wi-Fi customers -- and likely drive up Starbucks sales as more people (especially those who use their local Starbucks as their second office) stick around for longer. It may also make finding a seat at Starbucks a bit harder, though.

See you there!
