T-Mobile Officially Unveils the G2
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/09/09/t-mobile-officially-unveils-the-g2.htm

T-Mobile released a few details about the upcoming T-Mobile G2 with Google last month, but now the carrier is making it official. T-Mobile today announced that the G2, the follow-up to the G1, the first-ever Android phone, will be available for pre-order later this month.

T-Mobile did not say exactly when the G2 would be available or how much it will cost, noting that "additional availability details will be shared in the coming weeks." The carrier did detail the features of the phone for the first time, however, noting that it offers a 3.7-inch touch screen that has a "unique hinge design that opens to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard." The G2 also will offer a 5-megapixel camera, an HD video camera, an 800-MHz Snapdragon processor, and version 2.2 of the Android OS. Like the G1, the G2 will be manufactured by HTC.

T-Mobile also is hyping the phone's speed, noting that it "will offer customers downloads at 4G speeds," thanks to its support of T-Mobile's new HSPA+ network. While the HSPA+ network isn't a true 4G network, it is faster than a typical 3G network and can, in some situations, offer data speeds that rival 4G service. T-Mobile says the HSPA+ network now covers 100 million Americans in more than 55 major metropolitan areas.

Verizon Officially Launches the Samsung Fascinate
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/09/08/verizon-officially-launches-the-samsung-fascinate.htm

As had been rumored, Verizon this week announced availability of the Samsung Fascinate, its handset from Samsung's Galaxy S series of Android-based smartphones. The Fascinate will be available online as of September 8, with in-store availability beginning on September 9.

Verizon is charging $199.99 (after a $100 mail-in rebate) for the Fascinate; that price is the same as what AT&T and T-Mobile charge for their Galaxy S phones, the Captivate and Vibrant, respectively. Sprint, however, charges $249.99 for its Galaxy S phone, the Epic 4G, which is the only one of the bunch to offer both 4G support and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Like all of its Galaxy S siblings, the Fascinate features version 2.1 of the Android OS, as well as a 4-inch Super AMOLED touch-screen. Stay tuned for a full review.

More Twitter Users Going Mobile
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/09/06/more-twitter-users-going-mobile.htm

Twitter, the micro-blogging site that allows you to express yourself in 140 characters or less, continues to attract new users -- many of whom are accessing the service via a mobile device. The number of mobile Twitter users has increased 62 percent since April, Twitter Chief Executive Evan Williams notes in a recent blog post.

Williams notes that the company felt that accessing Twitter on your phone was too difficult, so they set out to make sure there was "a great client for each of the major mobile platforms." To this end, the company acquired Tweetie, maker of a third-party Twitter app, and turned it into Twitter for iPhone. Since the launch of Twitter for iPhone, the company has pushed onto other platforms, working with RIM on the release of Twitter for BlackBerry and creating Twitter for Android.

So, how do these mobile clients work? We have reviews of two of the most popular mobile Twitter apps. Read on to see if they're worth your time.

Texting: Not Just for Kids Anymore
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/09/02/texting-not-just-for-kids-anymore.htm

Think texting is just for kids? Hardly. As many as 72 percent of adult cell phone users send and receive text messages, according to a new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, which also reveals that texting among adults is on the rise.

"Texting among American adults has increased substantially over the past year," Pew says, noting that in September 2009, 65 percent of American adults were texters. While texting among adults is on the rise, it does not rival the popularity of texting among teens, Pew says. 87 percent of teen cell phone users text, sending and receiving an average of 50 messages per day. Adult users, on the other hand, send and receive an average of ten text messages per day, and consider voice calls the primary reason for using their phone.

Pew's study also revealed that:

82 percent of American adults own a cell phone

5 percent of adult texters send more than 200 text messages per day

Women tend to make slightly fewer call than men; 26 percent of men say they make or receive 6 to 10 calls a day, while 20 percent of women make the same claim

91 percent of cell phone owners say their phones make them feel safer

42 percent of cell phone owners say they feel irritated when a call or text interrupts them

65 percent of adults say they have slept with their phone "on or right next to" their bed

Looking to join the new wave of texters? You can find your perfect phone by checking out my list of today's best text messaging phones.

RIM's BlackBerry 6 OS: A Hands-on Review
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/31/rims-blackberry-6-os-a-hands-on-review.htm

Research In Motion has overhauled its BlackBerry operating system with the latest version, called BlackBerry 6, now available on the all-new BlackBerry Torch. Just as that phone features an entirely new look, so, too, does the software it runs.

RIM designed the BlackBerry 6 OS with the goal of delivering a powerful, but still user-friendly platform that offers the bells and whistles needed to compete with today's best mobile OSes, like Apple's iOS and Google's Android. So, how does BlackBerry 6 compare? Read my full review of RIM's new mobile OS to find out.

Samsung Fascinate Coming From Verizon Next Week?
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/30/samsung-fascinate-coming-from-verizon-next-week.htm

Verizon Wireless will launch the Samsung Fascinate, its device from Samsung's Galaxy S series of Android phones, on September 9, according to internal Verizon documents reportedly obtained by Boy Genius Report.

The Samsung Fascinate will be the last of the Galaxy S phones available from the four major nationwide carriers, and Verizon has released little information about the phone. Its siblings, the Samsung Captivate and Samsung Vibrant (pictured here), already are available from AT&T and T-Mobile, respectively, and Sprint plans to launch its Galaxy S phone, the Samsung Epic 4G, this week. All of the phones off similar features, such as a 4-inch Super AMOLED touch screen and Android version 2.1, but Verizon has not said much about what will differentiate the Fascinate from the others.

The news about the Fascinate comes just as Samsung is touting the success of its Galaxy S line. The company released a press release this morning noting that it has shipped 1 million Galaxy S phones since the line launched on July 15.

Samsung Epic 4G: Worth the Price?
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/25/samsung-epic-4g-worth-the-price.htm

Samsung's Epic 4G will hit Sprint stores next week, offering some distinctive features that none of its Galaxy S siblings can boast. For starters, the Epic 4G packs in a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and support for high-speed 4G networks. But it also comes with a higher price.

Sprint will sell the Epic 4G for $249.99; that price, which factors in a $100 mail-in rebate, is more than what you'll pay for competing smartphones. T-Mobile, for example, offers its Galaxy S phone, the Samsung Vibrant for $199.99. That's the same price that AT&T charges for the Samsung Captivate and a 16GB Apple iPhone 4. It's also what Verizon is charging for the Motorola Droid X.

The price of the Epic 4G also is $50 more than what Sprint currently charges for its other 4G-capable phone, the HTC EVO 4G. And like the EVO 4G, the Samsung Epic 4G comes with an extra cost each month: Sprint requires that you subscribe to a PDA/Smart Device service plan, such as the carrier's $69.99-per-month Everything Data plan, and that you pay a $10-per-month Premium Data add-on for its 4G service. Keep in mind that the add-on plan is required whether you live in an area with 4G coverage or not.

So, is the Epic 4G worth the premium price? It is a very impressive phone. Read my full review of the Samsung Epic 4G to find out more.

Google Voice: What Is It, Anyway?
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/23/google-voice-what-is-it-anyway.htm

Google Voice gets a lot of press these days, in large part because this free app can save you a lot of time and a good amount of money. But do you know what Google Voice is, and what it can do for you?

Google Voice is a free app that runs on your computer or your smartphone. It assigns you a free phone number, and places its own dialer on your phone. Using the service, you can send free text messages, make free domestic long distance calls, and make low-cost international calls. T-Mobile Announces Super-Speedy G2 Smartphone
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/19/t-mobile-announces-super-speedy-g2-smartphone.htm

T-Mobile has announced the follow-up to the T-Mobile G1 (pictured here), the first-ever Android smartphone. But the carrier hasn't shared many details about the phone, called the T-Mobile G2 with Google, other than to say that it will be the first phone to run on the carrier's speedy HSPA+ network.

In a statement announcing the phone, the company said, "T-Mobile is proud to have launched the world's first Android-powered phone, the T-Mobile G1, which captured the imagination of developers and consumers alike nearly two years ago. Now, we are readying its successor - the T-Mobile G2 with Google. Delivering tight integration with Google services, the G2 will break new ground as the first smartphone specifically designed for our advanced HSPA+ network, which delivers today's available 4G speeds."

T-Mobile's HSPA+ network is not a true 4G network - Sprint remains the only carrier to offer true 4G service. But the HSPA+ network is a speedier version of T-Mobile's 3G network, and it can, in some situations, offer data speeds to rival 4G service. The HSPA+ network was launched in Philadelphia and New York earlier this year, and should be available more widely available by the end of the year.

As for the first phone to support the HSPA+ network, the T-Mobile G2 with Google, T-Mobile says only this: "In the coming weeks, we'll share more details about the G2 and offer exclusive first access to current T-Mobile customers." Stay tuned for more details.

Amazon Offers BlackBerry Torch for $99
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/17/blackberry-torch-price-cut-in-half.htm

RIM's BlackBerry Torch smartphone has only been on the market for a few days, but savvy shoppers already can find steep discounts on the new phone. Amazon.com, for one, is offering the Torch for just $99, less than half of the phone's $199.99 list price.

The Torch is the first BlackBerry to feature both a touch screen and a hardware keyboard. It's also the first phone to ship with RIM's brand-new and completely redesigned BlackBerry 6 operating system.

The Torch was launched late last week on AT&T's network, and the carrier is still selling the phone for $199.99. Many bloggers are saying that Amazon's discounted price is a sign that the company has lost faith in the Torch, citing relatively weak demand for the phone in its first few days on the market. RIM, however, says that Amazon's price has been in effect since the phone was launched, and is not an indication of problems with the phone. Amazon regularly offers discounted prices on its lineup of phones, RIM says.

I agree; I don't think the Torch's situation is quite as dire as many bloggers would have you believe. BlackBerry phones typically appeal to business users, not the type of tech enthusiasts who are going to line up to buy a new device as soon as it's available. I'm willing to wait a few weeks -- or even months -- to see how well the BlackBerry Torch fares. I think its design is attractive, and the BlackBerry 6 OS, in particular, is well done.

NOTE: This post has been edited to clarify that Amazon has not cut the price of the Torch, but has been offering it for $99 since the phone's launch.

BlackBerry Torch Review: The Right Touch?
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/15/blackberry-torch-review-the-right-touch.htm

With all the buzz surrounding the latest Android phones and Apple's new iPhone, it's easy to forget about Research In Motion's BlackBerry phones. The new BlackBerry Torch, however, is designed to bring attention right back to these still-popular devices.

This slider-style smartphone is RIM's first BlackBerry to feature both a touch-screen and a hardware-based QWERTY keyboard, and is the first phone to ship with the completely redesigned BlackBerry 6 operating system.

On paper, the Torch sounds like a winner. But how does it stand up in hands-on use? Read my full review of the BlackBerry Torch to find out. And check out my list of today's best BlackBerry phones to see where the Torch lands.

Sprint Announces Epic 4G Launch Date, Pricing
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/12/sprint-announces-epic-4g-launch-date-pricing.htm

Sprint announced today that the Samsung Epic 4G, the carrier's second 4G smartphone, will be available beginning Tuesday, August 31 for $249.99 when you sign a new two-year service agreement. That price factors in a $100 mail-in rebate.

The Samsung Epic 4G will be Sprint's offering from Samsung's Galaxy S series of Android phones, two of which already are available: the Samsung Vibrant from T-Mobile and the Samsung Captivate from AT&T. Verizon Wireless plans to offer the Samsung Fascinate, but has yet to announce pricing or a launch date.

Like its Galaxy S siblings, the Epic 4G features a 4-inch Super AMOLED touch-screen and a powerful 1-GHz processor for speedy performance. But the Epic 4G boasts two features missing from the other Galaxy S phones: one is a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for easier typing, and the other is support for high-speed 4G networks. The Epic 4G will be Sprint's second 4G phone, after the HTC EVO 4G, which was launched earlier this summer.

Sprint will allow customers to reserve an Epic 4G handset ahead of the official launch; beginning August 13, the carrier will be accepting reservations at Sprint.com/Epic4G. At launch, the Samsung Epic 4G will be available in Sprint stores and at Sprint.com, as well as in Radio Shack, Best Buy, and Walmart stores.

Dell Streak: What Is It?
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/11/dell-streak-what-is-it.htm

Dell plans to unleash the Streak, a hybrid tablet/smartphone device, on the U.S. market later this week. The computer is now accepting pre-sale registrations, and will allow customers who register to pre-order the device on Thursday, August 12. The Streak will then be available to the public on Friday, August 13.

But what exactly is the Dell Streak -- is it more of a tablet, or more of a smartphone? And, more importantly, should you buy one if you're in the market for a new mobile phone?

The Streak is an Android-based device that's smaller than your average tablet, but bigger than any other smartphone available today. It sports a 5-inch touch-screen and measures 6 inches wide by 3.1 inches tall by .4 inches thick. It's capable of making voice calls over AT&T's cellular network, and can access data over the carrier's 3G network or via Wi-Fi wireless networks.

Dell will be selling the Streak, but is offering it with cellular service from AT&T. If you opt to sign a new two-year service contract with AT&T, you can get the Streak for $299.99. If you don't want to sign the AT&T contract, the Streak will cost you $549.99.

For more information about the Dell Streak, see Dell Streak: All the Details.

Verizon Launching the Droid 2 This Week
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/10/verizon-launching-the-droid-2-this-week.htm

After months of speculation, it's now officially official: the Motorola Droid 2 from Verizon Wireless will launch on August 12 for $199.99 when you sign a new two-year contract. As expected, the Droid 2 will feature the same form factor as the original Motorola Droid, but gets a few upgrades under the hood.

Like the original Motorola Droid, the Droid 2 will feature a 3.7-inch touch screen, but instead of the square black frame found on the original, the new version features a curvier, silver case. It retains the slide-out QWERTY keyboard found on the first version of the phone, but according to information from Motorola, the keyboard will include "larger keys and better tactility for easier typing." While I've yet to test out the new phone, a better keyboard would be a welcome improvement over the original Droid. I found its keyboard to flat to allow for easy typing.

The Droid 2 will ship with the very latest version of Android, 2.2. This updated operating system includes support for Adobe's Flash Player 10.1, which allows you to view multimedia Web sites as you would on your computer.

Other features include a 1-GHz processor and support for Verizon's 3G Mobile Hotspot service, which allows you to use the Droid 2 to create a wireless hotspot to which as many as five other devices can connect.

Verizon Wireless will begin accepting pre-orders for the phone on August 11, and the device itself will be available on August 12.

Android Phones More Popular Than Ever
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/08/05/android-phones-more-popular-than-ever.htm

It's no secret that phones running Google's Android software are becoming more popular, but just how popular might be something of a surprise. As many as 200,000 Android-based phones are being activated each day, Google said on Wednesday, just one day before iSuppli released new research predicting that Android-based phones would outsell those running Apple's iOS by 2012.

Google's CEO Eric Schmidt was asked about the Android platform while speaking to journalists at the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe, CA on Wednesday. Schmidt said that the company is now activating 200,000 Android phones a day, up from 100,000 units a day in May. He credits much of Android's success to new devices like the Droid X, he said.

Those new devices are likely what researchers at iSuppli had in mind when coming out with the company's latest forecast for smartphone sales. iSuppli predicts that, by 2012, Android will be used in 75 million smartphones, up from just 5 million in 2009. That increase will allow Android to overtake Apple's iOS in market share, iSuppli says.

RIM Lights Up the BlackBerry Torch

With all the buzz surrounding the latest Android phones and Apple's new iPhone, it's easy to forget that Research In Motion's BlackBerry devices are some of the best smartphones around. RIM and AT&T held a press conference on Thursday that was designed to remind you of this fact, however. The two companies took the wraps off of the BlackBerry Torch, a BlackBerry smartphone that has been completely redesigned, inside and out.

The slider-style Torch is the first BlackBerry to feature both a touch-screen and a hardware QWERTY keyboard. Additional features include a 5-megapixel camera, built-in GPS, support for 3G and Wi-Fi wireless networks.

The Torch also will be the first BlackBerry to ship with the new BlackBerry 6 OS. The updated operating system adds new customization options, as well as new features like a universal search tool, unified inbox, and a unified social feed.

The BlackBerry Torch will be available from AT&T beginning August 12 for $199.99 when you sign a new two-year service agreement.

For more details about the new phone, see BlackBerry Torch: All the Details.

What Are Today's Best Smartphones?
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/07/29/what-are-todays-best-smartphones.htm

I've spent a lot of time this summer testing out the latest and greatest smartphones. First, I was wowed by the HTC EVO 4G's big screen and speedy 4G connection. Then I was impressed with the iPhone 4's crystal-clear screen and slick design. I was won over by the Droid Incredible's speed and simplicity. And I was awed by, well, almost everything about the Droid X.

Any of these phones could top my list of today's best smartphones, but only one earns that honor. Find out which new smartphone it is by checking out this newly updated list of the best smartphones available today.

BlackBerry to Update OS, Unveil New Phones?
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/07/28/blackberry-to-update-os-unveil-new-phones.htm

Rumors are swirling that BlackBerry maker Research In Motion will unveil a new smartphone and an updated version of the BlackBerry OS next week, as the company has issued invitations to a private event next week. While RIM's invitation doesn't say very much, that hasn't stopped the speculation from building.

Much of that speculation surrounds the next version of the BlackBerry OS, version 6.0. RIM has offered sneak peeks of the software, which features a new look and a new Webkit-based browser. BlackBerry OS 6 will offer new graphics, crisper icons, and a new social networking feed.

Other rumors suggest that RIM will announce a new phone -- likely the BlackBerry Bold 9800 -- running that updated BlackBerry OS. The Bold 9800 is said to feature a touch screen and a slide-up QWERTY keyboard, a design that would make it similar to the Palm Pre.

RIM's invitation features both the BlackBerry and AT&T logos, so it seems likely that the companies are announcing new hardware, not just an updated OS. The event takes place on Tuesday, August 3. Stay tuned for all the details.

Droid X Sold Out at Verizon Stores
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/07/27/droid-x-sold-out-at-verizon-stores.htm

Hoping to get your hands on the slick new Droid X smartphone? Prepare to wait: the device is currently sold out through August 4, according to Verizon's site. And heading to a retail store isn't likely to land you a Droid X, either, as an analyst reports that the phone is sold out there, too.

In a research note on Monday, Gleacher & Co.'s Mark McKechnie said that he checked supplies of the Droid X over the weekend and late last week, and found "no supply [of the Droid X] at retail as all production is still going to fill 'pre-order' backlog."

The Droid X launched on July 15, and has proven popular, with its 4.3-inch screen and speedy performance. Sales of the Droid X may also have been buoyed by recent problems with Apple's new iPhone 4; that device has been plagued by reports of antenna problems and dropped calls since its launch in late June.

iPhone Likely Coming to T-Mobile?
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/07/22/iphone-likely-coming-to-t-mobile.htm

Remember those rumors about the iPhone coming to T-Mobile? They're back. A new report from Cult of Mac says that there is an 80 percent chance that T-Mobile will offer the iPhone this fall.

Cult of Mac says that talks between Apple and T-Mobile are "at a very advanced stage," according to a "highly placed source at the wireless company." The blog says that its sources works at T-Mobile, but asked not to be quoted directly and to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to talk to the press.

The first round of rumors regarding T-Mobile offering the iPhone surfaced in early June, when an investment analyst said in a note to investors that Apple's iPhone would be available from a carrier other than AT&T as soon as this fall. That analyst, Shaw Wu of Kaufman Bros., said that T-Mobile would be the likely choice based on conversations with Apple's suppliers.

Since the first version of the iPhone launched in 2007, rumors have swirled about when a carrier other than AT&T would offer it. Verizon Wireless has been the carrier most often mentioned as a likely destination for Apple's smartphone, but AT&T remains, for now, at least, the exclusive carrier of the device.

Despite Antennagate, Apple Reports Record Profits
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/07/20/despite-antennagate-apple-reports-record-profits.htm

Antenna problems? What antenna problems? If you were to judge by Apple's recent financial reports alone, you would never know there's been a huge uproar over faulty antennas on the new iPhone 4.

Apple on Tuesday reported record revenue for the third quarter of its 2010 fiscal year, and the numbers show a sharp increase over the same period last year. Apple reported $15.7 billion in revenue, up from $9.7 billion in the third quarter of 2009. Apple's profits were $3.3 billion, up from $1.8 billion last year.

Apple says the increase was due in large part to sales of the iPhone and iPad. But Apple's third quarter ended on June 26 - just days after the iPhone 4 hit the market, so it's likely that molst of the revenue was from sales of older iPhone models, and not those of the troubled new device.

While Apple has called the iPhone 4 launch its most successful product launch ever, the company has been dealing with complaints that the phone's cellular signal loses strength when users hold it in the lower left corner. Apple held a press conference last week in which the company downplayed the problems, but did offer free bumper cases to anyone who has purchased the iPhone 4.

Google announced today in a blog post that it has "received [its] last shipment of Nexus One phones," and noted that once it sells through these devices, "the Nexus One will no longer be available online from Google." What Google's blog post doesn't say is what this means for the future of the Nexus One, and the future of Google-branded phones in particular.

Google launched the Nexus One with much fanfare earlier this year, calling it a "superphone" that would be the first in "a series of devices" that Google planned to bring to market. But the Nexus One didn't quite live up to the hype; while the phone earned respectable reviews, it failed to sell as well as had been expected. Sprint even canceled its previously-announced plans to offer the device, and Google decided to close the Web store it had launched to sell the Nexus One.

Now, it seems the Nexus One has come to the end of its road. Google says that customer support will still be offered for Nexus One owners, and notes that the phone will continue to be sold by partners in other countries. What Google doesn't say is whether it will develop a follow-up device to the Nexus One, and whether that line of Google devices will ever materialize.

Apple's iPhone 4 Woes Worsen
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/07/14/apples-iphone-4-woes-worsen.htm

The news about Apple and its iPhone 4 isn't getting any better. Earlier this week, Consumer Reports issued a statement saying that it could not recommend the iPhone 4 because of the phone's reception problems, and now calls for a recall of the device are growing louder.

The iPhone 4 was launched late last month to great fanfare; pre-orders sold out ahead of its launch and long lines of eager shoppers snapped up the new phone as soon as it became available. But many of those buyers soon encountered what became known as the "grip of death" -- the fact that the iPhone 4's signal degraded greatly when they placed their hand on the lower left-hand corner of the phone.

Reports of this problem have been widespread, but I have not been able to replicate it in my usage of the iPhone 4 so far. Still, many technology bloggers and iPhone reviewers have experienced it, as have scores of users.

Apple initially told people to avoid holding the iPhone in that spot, and claimed the problem was actually due to a software flaw that caused the phone to display a higher signal strength than the phone was actually experiencing. But few people seem to believe Apple's claims, and now Consumer Reports has weighed in. The respected consumer magazine issued a statement saying it can't recommend the iPhone 4 because of the signal problem. (Consumer Reports did, however, give the iPhone 4 its top ranking among smartphones.)

Now, calls for a recall of the iPhone 4 are growing louder, and some PR experts are going so far as to say that a recall is inevitable. I'm not convinced that Apple will actually recall the phone -- the company has yet to even truly acknowledge the problem. But the furor over the iPhone 4's reception problems doesn't seem to be going away, so it will be interesting to see how Apple weathers the storm.

Today's Best Texting Phones
http://cellphones.about.com/b/2010/07/11/todays-best-texting-phones.htm

If you use your cell phones more for sending messages than for making phone calls, you're not alone. Text messaging is one of the most common uses for today's cell phones. But not all phones handle texting the same way -- and not all are designed for heavy texting.

What should you look for in a texting phone? For starters, you'll want a full keyboard; trust me, your thumbs will thank you. And you don't necessarily need all the features of a full-fledged smartphone -- and you don't need to pay the high price that a full-featured smartphone commands.

For more information, read my list of Today's Best Text Messaging Phones.
